Graphology is the analysis of the physical characteristics and patterns of handwriting with an attempt to identify the writer, indicate the psychological state at the time of writing, or evaluate personality characteristics
Graphology, inference of character from a person’s handwriting. The theory underlying graphology is that handwriting is an expression of personality; hence, a systematic analysis of the way words and letters are formed can reveal traits of personality.
Handwriting is unique to every person and it is an instant photograph of how we think, feel, and behave at that moment. It is a form of an expressive moment frozen on the paper, through which physiological and psychological functions are revealed. The handwriting of a person undergoes certain variations with his changing frame of mind and emotions. The person‘s disposition, whether glad or contented, happy or excited, sad or disappointed, is spoken out through his handwriting. These emotions [3,4] can be characterized through various handwriting indicators or traits of writing like Baseline, Slant, Pen-pressure, Size, Strokes
Graphologists note such elements as the size of individual letters and the degree and regularity of slanting, size, the pressure of writing, angularity \ curvature and strokes formations. Other basic considerations are the general appearance and impression of the writing, the pressure of upward and downward strokes, and the smoothness of the writing. For example, analytic graphologists interpret large handwriting as a sign of ambition and small handwriting as a sign of pedantry. The pressure of letter will be interpreted with the emotional state of the writer
The hand is an extremely complex and delicate mechanism, containing some 27 bones controlled by more than 40 muscles. Most of the muscles are situated in the lower arm and connect to the fingers by an intricate set of tendons. Their ability in manipulating a writing instrument is precisely coordinated by a timing system under a neural control of movements of the arm, the hand and the fingers. The precise ordering and timing of the movements determine the structure of the pattern recorded by the pen or pencil.
Handwriting is an acquired skill and clearly, one that is a complex perceptual-motor task sometimes referred to as a neuromuscular task.
